Phase 4

Authors Name- Nicolas Wright
Chapter Two- Pages 19-28
Chapter Title- The Boy Manfred

I found this source by searching in my local library.  I believe it to be reliable because it has many credible sources to back it up and it is in the Library of Congress.  This chapter is a great help because it really goes into depth on Manfred's early life and what he did in the military before he flew airplanes.  I also like the fact that it talks about Manfred's family and what they did during the war.

Summery

I appreciate the way the author portrays young Manfred as a fun loving boy looking for adventure.  On the other hand, he reminds everyone that Manfred was the firstborn in a traditional Prussian family, as such he would follow his fathers footsteps and pursue a military career.  "Manfred knew that he was destined for the army," says the author Nickolas Write, and he was being raised to be a leader and a fighter.

  1. I would just like to point out the the Library of Congress is the largest collection of books and media in the entire world... not everything in there is credible! Also, I think it would be great if you spent a little more time on your summary. I am someone who really doesn't know anything about the Red Baron or any of that stuff, and I am learning next to nothing about the topic by reading your summaries, nor am I seeing any sort of relevance or connection to an audience in your summaries.

  2. Nate, you do want to be accurate in your assessment of the credibility of sources. You say that this author has credible sources to back him up, but I don't see any works cited page in his book.

Also, do make your summaries a little more extensive. You say the chapter tells us what Manfred did in the military before he flew airplanes. However, remember you are writing to non-experts. You need to decide what types of things readers should know that would help you make some type of significant point about Manfred. What do you want your audience to understand about him? Are you trying to make this a character study on a brave warrior? If so, what does it mean that Manfred was a really poor student before he got to the military academy? How do you think his negative reactions to the discipline as his school is/is not related to his later life?

Also, make sure you are being accurate. Manfred was not the first born of all the children in his family. He had an older sister according to your book.
